Paha Tribe
The Paha people, sometimes called Pikwi by neighboring groups, live along the coast and have a deep-seated culture of trade, haggling, and bureaucracy. Known for their detail-oriented and somewhat pedantic nature, the Paha once held a dominant civilization. However, rising sea levels and flooding have reduced their lands, forcing many displaced Paha, including fishermen and farmers, into trade along inland waterways.
Among their prized goods is a unique patterned cloth, created from specially cultivated algae grown in tidal pools. The flooding has also disrupted the Paha’s traditional power structure, dividing them into two factions: the Nhapi, led by the conservative Noopyi, a hereditary trans woman leader who advocates for moving inland, and the Reclaimers, led by Toosa, a pragmatic woman who promotes reclaiming coastal lands with engineering solutions like dikes and artificial islands. The Nhapi believe the Reclaimers' plan could endanger more lives by resisting natural changes.
