About:
Clans are the foundation of governance in the Dine Republic, functioning as the core units of citizen participation and local administration. Each clan or band oversees a region, typically spanning from 50 to 1,000 miles, and is represented by hereditary delegates. These delegates, whose authority is passed down matrilineally, act as community leaders who understand the specific challenges, resources, and needs of their clan’s environment.
In the Dine Republic, Kivas are central gathering places in major cities, serving both religious and administrative purposes. These structures act as regional meeting spaces for clan leaders who convene annually to discuss and address the needs of their respective communities. During these gatherings, they compile important messages and requests, which are later delivered to the National Council by spiritual leaders, highlighting the religious heritage of the Kivas.
