Niwaanaki is a high-end restaurant in the Nabanamo districts in Cahokia, distinct for its exclusivity and ambiance. It features a wide variety of table sizes, accommodating anything from small gatherings to large parties, with private rooms—unusual in Cahokia. Workers and farmers are generally discouraged from visiting. The restaurant’s striking exterior is constructed with massive natural wooden beams that support layers of patchwork leather in vibrant colors, stretched and bound with leather straps to form a drum-like structure. At night, fires feed into clear tubes, creating dramatic flame pillars that can change color with added chemicals. Inside, a central bonfire burns continuously, complemented by smaller fires with comfortable seating areas around them. Servers dress in rough cloth tunics and pants, going barefoot on a floor of stripped wood planks, oiled and inlaid with colorful interlocking circles. Niwaanaki offers a limited menu with rotating dishes for lunch and dinner and remains closed outside these meal hours.
