Goals & Progress

Short-Term Goals

Characters can peruse two Short-Term Goals at a time. There are two types of Short-Term Goals:

Improving and Gaining Skills

To raise a General Skill, the Character must practice a number of Sessions equal to the Rank of the Skill the Character is trying to achieve. To raise a Specialized Skill the Character must practice a number of Sessions equal to half of the Rank to be gained, rounded up. Skills can only be raised 1 point at a time. Changing the Short-Term Goal before completion results in losing all progress.

Some Skills cannot be raised without a Mentor, indicated by an asterisk. If a Character spends time being guided or taught by a Mentor they can gain the increase in 1 fewer Sessions. A Mentor can be anyone with an equal or greater Rank in the Skill.

Skills should generally not be raised above 7. A player with a Skill Rank over 8 must take the Notoriety Gift or Burden and each subsequent Skill increase.

Obtaining Equipment

Characters can acquire gear one Wealth Rank higher than their own without a Wealth Check in a number of Sessions equal to the Cost Rank of the gear. This Goal represents all the effort it takes to acquire the gear, not just saving up money. Purchasing something more than one Cost Rank above the Character's Wealth Rank requires a Long-Term Goal.

Long-Term Goals

PDF p.262 / Book p.254

A Character can only change a Long-Term Goal with approval from the Story Guide (SG) and may only have one Long-Term Goal at a time. The types of Long-Term Goals are:

Gain a New Ability

Abilities are rare. They generally require 8 Sessions to complete. A Character can only get an Ability in their Path.

Increase a Stat

Stats can only increase one at a time. Each Stat takes twice as many Sessions as the Rank the Character is trying to achieve. Stats should generally not go above 5. If the Character does increase a Stat above 5, they must take the Notoriety Gift or Burden.

Gain a New Gift

Gaining a new Gift generally takes 4 Sessions.

Increase the Level of a Gift

Increasing the Level of a Gift generally takes twice the new Level in Sessions.

Decrease the Level of a Burden

Decreasing the Level of a Burden generally takes twice the current Level in Sessions.
