Nizi

In The Free Lands and much of Makasing, the economy operates with a mix of market socialism and aspects of a gift economy. The standard currency, nizi, originated in Cahokia and represents an hour of labor, though its modern usage is mostly digital. While private businesses thrive under strict regulation by the Council of Twelve, essential services like food, housing, education, and healthcare are also provided by government-run entities, often based on the citizen's ability to pay, even if that means nothing. Social status is linked to generosity, and while there are still economic classes, the disparity is less extreme, with no billionaires and very few millionaires. People tend to live modest, healthy lives, with access to basic needs, though wealthier individuals may own more luxury goods and have higher social standing.
