Chani
History
Chani is a 21 year old (born 689) from the Wichita Tribe west of Cahokia near the border with The Dine Republic on the Arkansaw River. He grew up close to his father, Pasahooshat who was an honest, quiet man, who never made a fuss about doing whatever it took to keep Chani safe. He was also a traditional man who resisted the new ways of the world, worried that we didn't know where this all could lead.
In the year 700 a general from The Dine Republic, Tawazi Chiiya, came into their town and accused Chani's father of killing two Dinada (from Dine) officers who went missing in the region. Before it was too late, Pasahooshat told Chani that he needed to run as far and as fast as he could. Chani knew he had to run, but couldn't bear to leave his father, so he snuck around to watch the trial. Chani only ran when the sentence was handed down; death by nyanthanka, a method of execution where the criminal is crushed by a large boulder.
Making his way across The Free Lands Chani picked up his skills in healing and learned to be quick and clever to get by, often having to use his agility instead of his speed to get up and away from anyone who might be out to hurt him. He traveled alone, but took as much help as he could. From 701 to 702 he was taken care of by a woman living alone in the woods to the West of Anikora named Wima Thaacha who administered the Adanadi to him since he was about to miss the age window. The next day, she was gone.
Back on the road, Chani caught a ride with a couple traveling in a trade caravan who were happy to look after him on their way to the markets in Cahokia. Having never been to a city even close to this size, Chani was caught by how seriously Cahokia took healing. Chani started to explore the city. In his exploration, he found the unused tunnels that kept him busy for miles.
When exploring Papanshin he came across a dilapidated hut and an overgrown garden with exceptionally rich soil. Since nobody was using it, Chani took the time to clean up the house, but especially the garden. One day, while clearing the overgrowth, Chani found an injured crow. Seeing that the crow needed help, Chani healed him. When the crow healed, Chani was happy to see that it wanted to stick around. Chani named him Tiko (black). After a few years, his garden already rivled many from around the city (partially because some of his plants were from gardens all around the city).
In 704, Chani was up at night when he heard a knock on his door. Answering it, Chani found a badly injured man standing in the doorway. The man told Chani that he had been stabbed, but it was important that he not go to the hospital because he was undercover and needed help. Chani agreed to help, and the man was greatly impressed by Chani's skills. The man rested in Chani's hut for two days until he suddenly left.
Cahokia was a much friendlier place than he'd ever been to. People in Cahokia aren't perfect, but he found that he didn't need to be as alert as he was used to. But even if he didn't need to run, he still felt all of the same energy. Fortunately, Cahokia's tight infrastructure gave Chani abundent opertunities to climb and jump, sometimes drawing attention.
With less time spent on the day to day struggle, Chani was finally able to confront his past, and most of all, the execution of his father. Chani can't help but believe that the charges were a set up, but at the same time, why would they come to single him out? He wasn't anyone important. Unfortunately, he might never get answers. It was around this time that Chani met a man named Awaholi Diihii who was begininng to gain followers as an cybernetic ascetic and shaman. This subculture came to be called Kookooiya (mud lovers). Through the use of meditation, psychadelics and cybernetics Chani began his spiritual journey.
On the twelth of Taha 710, while exploring the tunnels and the teachings of Awaholi, Chani met a girl named Anishahanawi Bizapanooshi (Ahana) who quickly became enamoured with Chani. Spending the next few hours together, they came to be in the chamber called Naazhiig. During the teaching, the roof of the chamber collapsed. As it happened, the chamber was beneath Ahana's father's home. Chani recognized her father as the man whom he had healed six years before. Noosoo and his wife Mana invited Chani into their home, where they became fast friends, leading to a shared mushroom trip and a near betrothal.
That night and the next morning, Chani and Tiko worked together to find and rescue and injured dog whom he names Taaz.
